The first round of the Concern Primary Debating Competition took place on 15th October against St. James’ National School in Durrus. We successfully proposed the motion ‘Shopping local must become the new normal’. All of 5th & 6th class were involved with researching the topic but it was Anna, Leon and Siún who delivered the three speeches. We learnt a lot because it was the first time that any of the speakers had participated in a debate and it made us question our own habits.
In the second round of the competition, we were drawn against Clogagh National School. The motion was ‘Billionaires should not go to Space’. We successfully opposed the motion. It was a very interesting topic and one that took a lot of research.
The quarter final of the competition was against Barryroe National School. The motion was ‘Sports Stars are bad role models for children’. We proposed the motion but unfortunately we were defeated. We were very proud to have reached the quarter finals and it was a great experience.
